Matamoros was assigned the control number "9". All of the stamps delivered to this main office will have a "9" and a two digit year imprinted, generally reading down the right-hand side of the stamp.

The folded letter above bears a 25 centavo stamp overprinted with a "9" and "70" and the "MATAMOROS" district name (in black under the cancel running down the right cheek of Father Hidalgo). The oval cancel indicates that it was used on the "DILIGENCIA GENERALES" General Stagecoach line form the Matamoros office of that line.
